3 Reasons To Call an Attorney

Are you in a legal bind? While you can adequately represent yourself in some cases, like small claims or a basic traffic ticket, you’ll likely end up causing more harm if you stand in as your own legal counsel. Knowing when you should hire an attorney can be just as important to your case as hiring one.

1. Car Accident

You’ll likely want to call an auto accident attorney in Columbia MD if you’ve sustained serious injuries in a car accident. You won’t be in the frame of mind to deal with the insurance companies, and they know that. The insurance company wants you to accept the smallest settlement possible, and even though the amount offered might sound good at the time, you need to account for everything you are owed. Those costs could include:

  • Medical bills
  • Transportation costs
  • Both current and potential future lost income
  • Medical Devices
  • Medications
  • Medical assistance

2. DUI

You don’t want to do anything until you speak to an attorney if you have made the mistake of driving under the influence. Don’t speak to the police or any other attorneys until you’ve consulted your own. You might not want to pay for one, but the attorney will likely be able to easily get the court to reduce your required fees, sometimes by as much as half. A lawyer will also be more likely to reduce how long your license is suspended.

Additionally, a lawyer could be your biggest asset if you have to go to court for your DUI. Judges have little to no patience for people representing themselves and won’t allow for missed filing dates and misunderstandings. DUI lawyers have the experience to work with the judge and increase your chances of a better outcome.

3. Divorce

Dealing with a divorce is stressful, and your pain and hurt are very real. But, that pain can potentially cause you to say things out of anger or do things that won’t help your divorce go any smoother. Additionally, your spouse might not be working with you to work on a fair settlement or wants to keep you away from your children.

Let an attorney navigate the tough issues. The attorney can work with your spouse’s lawyer and reduce your stress. Your lawyer can also help you understand what your options are. You might not have the most current or correct information pertaining to your circumstances, so you might be willing to cave on issues that you don’t have to.
