How to Keep Yourself Save when Riding a Motorcycle

August 25th, 2021 cedric luis Lawyer 0 comments

It is a fact that it is fun to ride a motorcycle, but they are less safe than cars. For instance, they lack seat belts and do not have an exterior frame to absorb crash forces. However, some riders consider that part appealing to them because they can live a life of taking risks. Despite that, you first must consider your safety when riding a motorcycle by following the tips below.

Confirm the weather conditions before stepping out

Weather elements such as snow, ice, strong winds, and rain can compromise your rise. In particular, driving on the road with such elements can be hazardous for riders since their bikes will have limited traction and visibility. Therefore, you need to ride your bike when weather experts have predicted that you will have stable weather in your area. You can also design a plan on how you can enhance yourself if the weather worsens.

Wear a motorcycle safety

Wearing appropriate motorcycle safety gear can help protect you from road crushes, debris, and weather elements. The recommended motorcycle riding gear includes non-slip gloves, over the ankle boots, leather pants, a leather jacket, goggles, and a DOT-approved helmet. Apart from that, you need to dress in layers to adjust your clothing how to the weather changes. Ensure you avoid wearing sandals, shorts, a T-shirt, or jeans, since they cannot protect you from harm.

Inspect your motorcycle before every ride

Although you might have the best driving skills, you can find yourself in serious trouble if you face mechanical issues with your motorcycle. Therefore, before you start every ride, you need to inspect the following:

  • If the throttle, clutch, and brakes are working properly
  • The turn signals and lights are working
  • The bike does not leak, and it has the right oil levels
  • It has the required tire pressure
  • Check the brakes, horns, handlebars, and mirrors

You should not delay in fixing an issue that requires urgent attention. Also, it can be helpful if you conduct the required regular maintenance, such as suspension and chain adjustment, oil and tire changes.

Obey traffic laws

Although it might be obvious, it is critical to follow traffic laws such as driving at the recommended speed limits, using signals, and following lane markings. You also need to avoid unnecessary overtaking because you might not know the conditions of the road ahead. Further, you need to avoid riding your bike when drowsy, or under the influence of drugs. Most importantly, you need to avoid issues that can distract you, including keeping your phone away and not wearing headphones.

Watch observant and monitor road hazards

Defensive bike riding will enable one to anticipate road hazards and traffic issues. For instance, gravel, soil, and sand can make the bike lose traction. Also, potholes and bumps are dangerous, and you need to avoid them. Further, you need to stay at a safe distance from vehicles. The distance will vary depending on your state rules. By doing that, you can easily stop if you experience an emergency. Most importantly, if you ride defensively, you can have adequate room to change lanes and make turns.

Carry a first-aid kit

It is advisable to keep a basic first-aid kit while riding your motorcycle to help you if you suffer from an injury. The kit can include adhesive tape, gauze, hand sanitizer, and bandages.

Pursue an advanced motorcycle safety course

You might be required to take a riding skills test to get a motorcycle license. Even though your state does not stipulate riders to undertake a motorcycle safety course, you need to pursue it. The course can educate you regarding the motorcycle laws that apply to your state, reacting to emergencies, and offer you an opportunity to try new skills. Most importantly, the advanced course will prepare you to ride your bike with more confidence safely.
